Ningbo Daily: Foresight Behind the "Short-sighted"

        Before the financial crisis in 2008, union source put forward a goal of the next 3 to 5 years—be an enterprise with stuffs of 100 and annual volume of export of 50 million dollars. 
        Now, at the end of 2012, the General Manager of Union Source, Chen Yongzhen, is so pleased at the annual report of 2012. The annual volume of export has surpassed 100 million dollars and the salesman of his sub-company is nearly 100.
        What surprises us is that this achievement was achieved in a depressed context of global financial crisis and European debt crisis.
         From comprehensive scale to breakthroughs in key area
       “It’s really hard to develop foreign business. I thought that it was pretty good to double the export volume in 3-5 years”said by Chen Yongzhen, the General Manager of union source when he was asked about the form goal he made in 2008.
       “Really hard” is not an exaggeration. The main products of union source are daily-use sundry goods.  The business scale has reached thousands of factories and products in 2008. Union source has occupied the advantages in products like students’ supplies, locksets, headwear, cleaning supplies and etc. Meanwhile, the company has direct oversea customers in more than 30 countries and regions, such as America, Europe, Australia, South America, Africa and etc.
         Chen has his own worries: faced with so many suppliers, customers and thousands of products, salesmen are so busy that mistakes appear one after another, which enlarges the operating and maintaining cost of the company.
         Foreign trade companies in China were under a gloomy situation when the global financial crises break through in 2008. Union source, which regarded America and Europe as its main market, also had a great depression. By a deep analysis of global markets, Chen decided to turn the business market from EU to other new countries. What’s more, Chen also adjusted the way of development from a very comprehensive scale to breakthroughs in some key areas. Meanwhile, main customers were changed from wholesalers to retail stores. Finally, union source put its foothold in Russia. A famous Russian supermarket group became the main target of Union Source.
          Mutual development with the retailer giant 
        “We chose Russia as our key customer not only because of its vast territory promises a great market potential, but also at that time, Russia was trying their best to enter the WTO, that would bring great opportunity to us.” Chen said when he was taking the interview. “Additionally, we changed our main customer from wholesaler to retailer because it would lead to a more initiative and stable cooperation relationship.”
         One important strategy made my Chen is the establishment of strategic cooperation that based on mutual benefit and development between union source and the supermarket group.
         In order to provide a better service to the supermarket group, Union Source has established a sub-company to specifically settle the business with them. Both sides have done great efforts to promote the communication with each other. Both sides have organized management group to visit their partners for several times. With the business going forward closer and deeper, this supermarket group has become the biggest customer of union source while union source has been an important shareholder of the supermarket group.
         The cooperation between Union Source and the supermarket group has achieved mutual benefits. When the cooperation began in 2010, the supermarket has more than 300 stores and in 2011 it  increased to 600. This year, in 2012, they have achieved more than 1000 stores in Russia. Over half amount of their products that purchased in China were supplied by Union Source.
Working with the supermarket group is a good example of breakthroughs in key area. Union Source has achieved a year-on-year growth of 50% in 2012.
